The Guy

I was born and raised in Dublin but always had an affinity with Donkeys. In National School a radio station spoke to us about Christmas, specifically, ‘what would we ask Jesus?’ and I asked ‘What was riding a donkey like?’.

In 2011 the Donkey Sanctuary Ireland said that they had no one to run the full Cork City Marathon that year. So I decided to do it for them. I only had 4 weeks to prepare. I had never done a 'run' of any distance before. I also decided to wear minimal shoes (like foot gloves). My goal was to complete the marathon in under 4 hours. I did it in 3:38. This time, the challenges are greater, but I have longer to prepare and longer to fundraise.

I don’t know where it comes from, but I’ve always loved Donkeys. They have a really relaxed, friendly and curious attitude. The Donkey Sanctuary doesn’t just care for Donkeys, it also provides Riding Therapy to Children with special needs. Donkeys are calm and patient with children and through their own confidence and contentment help the kids become more confident and content too. Riding also helps the children socially and physically.

When I am driving in the countryside I warn my passengers that ‘I may have to stop suddenly’ if I see some donkeys to visit.

Until I move to the countryside and can foster my own donkey friends I’ll have to make do with dudes like Pepé, who I brought all the way from Texas.
